Our Jewish community was organized over 100 years ago. Our
congregation has a 50 year history
at this site,
Jews by birth, Jews by choice and non-Jews wishing to explore Judaism
are welcome to attend our
services and programs.
We are proud and happy to explain our worship and history.
Temple Beth El is the focal point for Jewish Community in the Greater
Battle Creek Area.
Since our founding we served the spiritual and religious needs of our
congregation through worship,
study, charitable works, and commemorating life events.
We continue to offer opportunities for leadership, fellowship, and
learning.
We are the local affiliate of the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations and part of the
Progressive Judaism movement. We work closely with other
congregations to enrich and preserve
Jewish living in West Michigan.
Our building includes a sanctuary seating over 150, rooms for study,
a Temple library, social hall,
kitchen and parking facilities. Our social hall and sanctuary have
been recently refurbished.
Our memberships supports these efforts through the payment of dues.
Donations to the Temple are
tax deductible.
Our congregation is governed by a Board of Trustees and officers
elected by the membership.
The Board arranges for the services of the Rabbi. It also administers
the functions of the
congregation.
Our activities include:
* Worship services on Shabbat, High Holy days, and Festivals. Our worship is in English and
Hebrew, often with the accompaniment of an organist.
* A regular bulletin to keep members informed of our plans, activities, and concerns, along with
news of congregants and their families.
* Cultural events such as Purim and Channukah celebrations, guest speakers, or performers.
* Support for members in preparing for life events including Brit Milahs, Namings, Consecrations,
B'nai Mitzvot, Confirmations, Marriages, and Funerals.
* Religious school for children of congregants to encourage children to learn Hebrew, history, ethics,
and customs of our people. This is done in cooperation with Temple B'nai Israel of Kalamazoo.
* Rabbinical services for individual study and counseling on spiritual matters.
* Representation of and advocacy for the interests of the Jewish Community in local matters.
* Opportunities, for those choosing Judaism, to associate with our congregation to enrich their
spiritual search.
* A Judaica shop to provide books, ritual, and gift items for member purchase.
* Opportunities to provide a lasting memorial or honor for loving family.
Anyone interested in joining us may apply to the board for
membership. Additional information may
be obtained by speaking with the Rabbi, President, or the Membership
Chairperson.
